Uni Knot

85–95% — slightly less than Palomar but tunable

mono fluoro braid

Updated · by Fish-logged

A wonderfully versatile knot: tie it once and it's a hook knot; tie it twice end-to-end and it becomes a line-to-line splice (the "Double Uni"). The Uni knot can also be left loose to function as a sliding loop on a lure.

When to use it

The Uni is the Swiss army knot of fishing. Tie it tight against a hook eye for a strong terminal connection. Tie a second Uni in the opposite line and slide them together to join two lines (double Uni). Cinch the wraps near the hook but not against the eye and you get a free-swinging loop that gives lures more action.

How to tie it

  1. Pass the tag end through the eye and bring it back parallel to the standing line.
  2. Loop the tag back over both lines so a circle forms with the tag pointing back toward the hook.
  3. Make 5 or 6 wraps with the tag end, going around both lines and through the inside of the loop.
  4. Moisten the wraps. Pull the tag end first to seat the wraps into a neat barrel, then pull the standing line to slide the knot down against the hook eye.
  5. Trim the tag — and if you want a sliding loop instead of a tight knot, leave 5 mm gap between the wraps and the hook.
