A wonderfully versatile knot: tie it once and it's a hook knot; tie it twice end-to-end and it becomes a line-to-line splice (the "Double Uni"). The Uni knot can also be left loose to function as a sliding loop on a lure.
When to use it
The Uni is the Swiss army knot of fishing. Tie it tight against a hook eye for a strong terminal connection. Tie a second Uni in the opposite line and slide them together to join two lines (double Uni). Cinch the wraps near the hook but not against the eye and you get a free-swinging loop that gives lures more action.
How to tie it
- Pass the tag end through the eye and bring it back parallel to the standing line.
- Loop the tag back over both lines so a circle forms with the tag pointing back toward the hook.
- Make 5 or 6 wraps with the tag end, going around both lines and through the inside of the loop.
- Moisten the wraps. Pull the tag end first to seat the wraps into a neat barrel, then pull the standing line to slide the knot down against the hook eye.
- Trim the tag — and if you want a sliding loop instead of a tight knot, leave 5 mm gap between the wraps and the hook.
