Palomar Knot

95–100% of line strength

mono fluoro braid

Updated · by Fish-logged

The strongest and easiest line-to-hook knot in fishing. Doubles the line, passes the doubled loop through the hook eye, ties one overhand, then passes the hook through the loop. Three steps.

When to use it

The Palomar is the go-to choice for tying braid to a hook or swivel — braid is slippery and slim, and the doubled loop prevents the knot from slipping under load. Also strong enough for fluorocarbon leaders and lure clips. Less commonly used for very thick mono (over 30 lb) because the double-line loop becomes bulky.

If you only learn one knot, learn the Palomar.

How to tie it

  1. Double 6 inches of line and pass the resulting loop through the eye of the hook.
  2. Tie a simple overhand knot in the doubled line, leaving the hook hanging loose. Don\'t tighten it yet.
  3. Pass the entire hook up through the loop you just made.
  4. Moisten the knot with saliva (this matters — friction will burn weak braid otherwise) and pull both the tag end and the standing line at the same time to seat the knot snugly against the hook eye.
  5. Trim the tag end to about 2 mm.
