Improved Clinch Knot

90–95% of line strength

mono fluoro

Updated · by Fish-logged

The classic mono-to-hook knot. Pass the line through the eye, wrap the tag end around the standing line five or six times, then tuck it back through the first loop near the eye AND through the new loop above the wraps.

When to use it

For decades the default knot for monofilament. Still excellent on mono and fluorocarbon up to ~25 lb. Loses strength on slippery braid — use the Palomar instead. Quick to tie once practised; the "improved" tuck (the second pass-through) is what stops mono from slipping under load.

How to tie it

  1. Pass the tag end through the eye of the hook (or the eye of the swivel).
  2. Wrap the tag end around the standing line 5 or 6 times, working away from the hook eye.
  3. Bring the tag back and pass it through the small loop right next to the eye.
  4. Now pass the tag back through the bigger loop you just made (this is the "improved" tuck).
  5. Moisten and pull the standing line slowly to draw the wraps down. They should sit neatly stacked against the hook eye — not bunched. Trim the tag to 2 mm.
