FG Knot

95–100% — the strongest braid-to-leader knot

braid+fluoro

Updated · by Fish-logged

A slim, hyper-strong braid-to-leader knot used in saltwater lure fishing and surface lure work where a fat knot would catch in the rod guides. Trickier to tie than the Albright but slips through guides perfectly.

When to use it

The go-to braid-to-fluoro splice for casting lure setups — surface lures, jerkbaits, soft plastics. Passes through rod guides smoothly on every cast so you can use a long fluoro leader without sacrificing distance. Worth practising at home before relying on it at the water.

How to tie it

  1. Tension the leader between your teeth (or a hook on a wall) and the spool of the rod. Keep it taut throughout.
  2. Loop the braid OVER the leader, then UNDER, then back over — that\'s one "FG wrap". Keep the wrap snug against the previous one.
  3. Repeat for 18–22 wraps in total, alternating the direction of each wrap. The wraps build a tight sleeve around the leader.
  4. Hold the wraps in place. Tie 2 half-hitches with the braid tag end around both the leader and the braid tail, in opposite directions.
  5. Trim the leader tag close to the wraps, then add 3 final half-hitches with the braid for security. Trim braid tag last.
