Albright Knot

85–90% on dissimilar materials

mono+braid mono+wire mono+heavy-mono

Updated · by Fish-logged

The standard knot for joining two lines of different diameter or material — typically a thicker shock leader to a thinner mainline, or wire trace to mono.

When to use it

If you need to join 30 lb braid to a 60 lb mono shock leader on a beachcaster, this is the knot. Smaller and more reliable than the slim-profile FG when the diameter mismatch is significant. The classic application is splicing wire trace into mono in pike fishing.

How to tie it

  1. Fold the heavier line (or the wire) into a U-shape, leaving a tag end about 4 inches long.
  2. Thread the lighter line through the U from below, so it lies along the heavier loop with the tag pointing back the way it came.
  3. Wrap the lighter line back over the U and around both strands of the U 10–12 times, working from the heavier line's bend toward the tag.
  4. Thread the tag end of the lighter line back through the U at the same end it entered.
  5. Moisten. Pull the standing parts of both lines slowly. The wraps slide along the U and compact into a neat sleeve. Trim both tags.
